Well and concisely said! I spent three months in Aotearoa/NZ last year, visited Waitangi, learned about the treaty—and as I traveled learned more and more of the sad history of violence, lies and betrayals the English inflicted on the Māori people. And yet, this document stands and has brought some justice to those who signed it long ago. Queen Elizabeth even came to apologize in person for the crown’s failure to live up to the promises of the treaty. Some land has been restored. Some dignify honored. There is a long road ahead, and frankly the current govt is driving in reverse. But the conversation in A/NZ is a different world than in Canada and the US, let alone Australia.
