The metaphor to the avalanche ignores that more CO2 still produces more warming. And simply slowing the pace of warming could allow for more potent mitigation efforts - plus buy time more adaptation to be put in place.

Smoking is a good analogy: if you smoke and have lung cancer, you could simply say, well, I might as well keep smoking! I’m going to rumor anyway. Or, you could stop smoking and get treatment, and maybe live longer, maybe even recover. What you are advising is “keep smoking.”
