Thank you Fünda, for your thoughtful response. Indeed, in the US (where I am a citizen) men in certain states are using their Evangelical Christian religion to oppress women. I don't know what your views are on abortion, but I don't believe the bible justifies men in power dictating what women can and cannot do with their bodies.

Fundamentalism off all stripes is all too often a covering for misogyny.

I guess a good analogy to the hijab might be: should a Christians stop wearing crosses knowing the the KKK used to burn crosses to threaten and intimidate black people?

Also, in India, the Swastika is a sacred symbol thousands of years old. Should Hindus stop using the Swastika because Hitler adopted it and committed atrocities?

There might of course be times and places where a sensitive person would refrain from using a symbol in a way that could invoke fear in another--or leave the impression that one was a supporter of a heinous cause.

Thanks for helping me think this through more clearly.
