Of course, in such a harsh environment, for hundreds of years most people lived at a subsistence level, with no formal education and poor health conditions (Smokey houses, for example). So their simple lifestyle was not exactly a choice. What is remarkable is that many people lives such a simple life while pursuing spiritual wisdom. And this persists even today under a severe and at time brutal Chinese occupation.
