I remember maps like this in 1986-7 when I was teaching in China. Similarly drawing the nine-dash line and borders that included other’s territories - and always showing Taiwan as part of the PRC. So, what’s really new here? Certainly building islands in international waters. But, the real news I think is the other nation’s growing collaboration in the face of it. I remember asking one of my students about these maps, and he answered simply, “well, maybe it’s not really part of China…but I want my country to be as large as it can be!”
