Douglas, I’m so appreciating this article, but on this one point I disagree - it’s too strong a statement, that human society is inherently patriarchal. By universalizing, you make creating change a higher bar than it needs to be, and you open the door for the objection, “because is IS human nature, we can’t change it. I find a stronger position is this: most human societies have become patriarchal, but there was a time when that was not so - or at the very least, cannot be established as so. There’s scant evidence for patriarchy in Paleolithic societies, and in fact, much evidence that Neolithic, goddess worshipping societies venerated images of women, including women on “thrones,” and in other high-status representations. It looks as if during the Neolithic, in Europe, a change took place that led to more war like, male dominated societies emerging in the Bronze Age. In other words, patriarchy evolved…and as such, if can alway be replaced. (See my book on this topic: Savage Breast)
