Dear Greg, you make such a good point in terms of "flâneur" -- though the French verb actually derives from the Old Norse "flan" (remember the Norse conquered Normandy?). So it's really a Viking term. Belatedly I have started to use "flâner" as the infinitive verb form, but after two years of misusing it, the damage is done, so I most often simply use "flâneur" as a verb, keeping in mind similar cases in English, "to soldier" or "to tinker." While I think "to flan" would be more correct, it brings to mind the image of someone making a French pudding...

But, thank you for your close attention to the grammar of loan words. My sister, who is a college English teacher, would be delighted.
