Every single instinct your post quotes about whistleblowers, insiders speaking out, and the uncovering of government wrongdoing we know about because of....A FREE PRESS. If the state and the elite controlled the media, you would not be able to cite these instances, because Big Brother would have quashed them. Your article itself is evidence of the free press at work.

does a free press mean we live in a Utopia? Does it mean the press cannot be bought, coerced, corrupted? No. And, in countries around the world, journalists die because they write the truth, and the powers that be order them silenced.
