Brad, I once explained to a Tibetan guide (in Kham, eastern Tibet) that I did not consider myself a Buddhist because I did not believe in reincarnation nor nirvana. He gave me a withering glance: “You obviously understand nothing about Buddhism. It has nothing to do with you believe in this doctrine or that doctrine. If I have a question, I ask four, five different lamas and each one gives me a different answer. Because their experience is different. Buddhism is an attitude of ceaseless questioning of your reality. You idiot.” He did not say that last bit out loud, but this youth with grade 10 education sure implied it. I realized then that I was a Buddhist.
