Ben, I fear your article ignores that famous quote of Churchill’s - Democracy is the worst system of government, except for all the rest. You universalize both politicians and journalists, and it’s not fair to paint all media shows (except GPS) with the same broad brush.
I co-authored a book about this with an expert in the power of cognitive biases )Dr. Gleb Tsipursky, called ProTruth: How to Put Truth Back into Politics.
We make the case that all politicians are tempted to lie - but it is the job of the media to hold them to account, and the job of the public to vote out the liars. We then analyze how this has broken down, in good part due to the rise of social media and the internet. We describe Trump as a SuperPredator on this fragmented political ecosystem who easily exploited the worst tendencies of the media, and the cognitive biases of ordinary people. And we talk about how to fix it.
I hope this will be the focus of your next article. How do we regain credibility and trust, and better compel politicians to fear lying to the electorate? My co-author started the ProTruth Pledge with this in mind. You might want to check it out. Www.protruthpledge.org
Finally - this is an extremely important topic, so that you for writing about it.
Your fan,
Tim
