Barry, excellent reporting, thank you - and, I’m sure you know the reference to America as the “beautiful country” is NOT sarcastic. “Mei Gou” is the phoneme for America” - using the characters that mean “beautiful country”. Like Canada is “Ja Na Da.” My students in China in the 1980s did also think of America as the “beautiful country” without any irony. I sometimes wonder what 21st century Chines make of it now that they can travel there so freely.
